ABOUT The World Traveller

Belgian travel aficionado who loves to go out and explore the world

The Dalai Lama once said:
"Once a year go someplace you've never been before"
And that's exactly what I have been doing since 1998.
In order to preserve memories of about everything there is to see, I constantly take photographs (which almost drives my husband crazy).
It is an amazing world out there!
Over the years my photo collection expanded and finally I decided to show my work to the world.

This website is a work in progress so you might want to visit it now and then to discover what's new.
In case you are wondering about my "best of" experiences, I'll give you some of my favourites here.
Best of... ADVENTURE
Monument Valley (USA) — Horse riding in the middle of nowhere with a few travel mates, under the guidance of two native Americans. Late in the evening we share stories around the campfire and then we sleep under the open sky, with a million stars above our heads. Early the next morning I go for a stroll on my own and see the silhouette of a lynx against the rising sun and the Monument Valley skyline. After breakfast we return by horse and galloping back with the wind in my hair I just feel happy.
Best of... ARCHITECTURE
Angkor Wat (Cambodia) — The whole site is impressive but the stone faces of the Bayon Temple and the root of the banyan tree on the Ta Prohm Temple are my super favourites.
Best of... CANYONS
Bryce Canyon, (USA) — Hike down between the hoodoos, follow a dried riverbed, get lost and as evening falls suddenly a snake hisses right by my side... I never ran so fast in all my life.
Best of... CLOUDS
Tenerife — Standing above a sea of clouds looking like fluffy white cotton balls all packed together.
Best of... EMOTIONS
Nepal — Meeting my Nepalese godchild Sandhya for the first time. Click here to know more about it.
Best of… GOOD ADVICE
Perito Moreno (Argentina) — When hiking on the glacier ice with crampons on your feet, go up like a duck and down like a monkey. Meaning: walking with your toes turned out (like a duck) going uphill and turned inwards (like a monkey) going downhill.
Best of... GOOD AND BAD NEWS
Peru — Halfway our Peru trip we are informed that the Vargas airline company went bankrupt. For about a week it is not clear how or when we will get home. Finally our travel agent books us on a flight to New York, arriving early in the morning. Our connecting flight to Brussels is scheduled late in the evening that same day. So we take the AirTrain to downtown New York, get on a hop-on hop-off bus and unexpectedly visit downtown New York for almost a day. A nice little extra!
Best of… HOTELS
Bahía Príncipe Tulum (Mexico).
Best of... MUSIC
Venezuela — Have a swim in the Caribbean Sea, relax on a sailboat sipping a cocktail and listen to Bob Marley. This holiday feeling pops up every time I hear reggae music playing.
Best of... PEOPLE
The Iban (Borneo) — An unforgettable stay with the original inhabitants of Borneo. After a praw trip through the dense jungle we are warmly welcomed at a longhouse where 14 Iban families live together. The Iban people show us their way of life and traditions, cook for us and entertain us. Even without speaking each others language we manage to communicate, we laugh a lot toghether, drink (too much) rice wine, joke around and play magic tricks. After a night (trying to) sleep on the ground, the Iban take us to the fields where they grow pepper and pinapple and teach us about the medicinal properties of herbs. At noon we are treated to a meal prepared outdoors. First they gather wood, then they show us how to fold rice in a banana leaf, put the package inside a bamboo stick and put it on a campfire to cook. Pieces of chicken pricked on a branch are grilled above another fire, fresh vegetables are served as well and we have juicy pineapple for dessert. The meal is surprisingly well cooked and yummie. After lunch two Iban boys take us back by canoe through the jungle to the pick up point where our transport is waiting. The Iban people of Borneo are forever in my heart.
Best of... SOUVENIRS
Thailand — My husband (no kidding and he is not Thai nor am I)
Best of... WATERFALLS
Dettifoss (Iceland) — We saw the most amazing double rainbow over this powerful waterfall in a fantastic nature setting. We liked it so much that we went back the next day and drove up to see it from the other side. Well worth the detour!
